Navigating Pushback and Undermining in Professional Relationships

Writer: Justine JonesJustine Jones

As a local government consultant, I’m accustomed to facing a variety of challenges. But a recent experience with a client provided me with a unique opportunity to refine my approach to conflict resolution and reaffirm the value of perseverance and adaptability in professional settings.

The Challenge

I was tasked with assisting a local government client in enhancing their operational efficiency—a goal we were both motivated to achieve. However, as we delved into the project, it became clear that our visions for how to achieve this goal were not aligned. The client was resistant to new methods, often giving pushback, undermining my suggestions, and emphasizing the value of spending more time "just doing the work" rather than reevaluating inefficient processes.

Initial Reactions

My initial reaction was frustration—I felt that my expertise was being underutilized and that the pushback was a roadblock to progress. However, I quickly realized that responding emotionally would only escalate tensions and hinder our collaboration. Instead, I took a step back to reassess my approach, reminding myself that my primary role was to support the client's success.

Strategies for Overcoming Resistance

  1. Active Listening: I began by dedicating more time to actively listen to the client’s concerns and the reasons behind their resistance. This helped me understand their perspective and demonstrated my respect for their experience and knowledge.

  2. Building Trust: I focused on small wins and gradual implementations of new strategies. By demonstrating the effectiveness of my suggestions through tangible results, I was able to slowly build trust and reduce resistance.

  3. Adaptability: I adapted my recommendations to better align with the client's comfort level and pace of change. This sometimes meant compromising on the ideal solution but ensured that improvements could be implemented more

    smoothly.

  4. Education and Transparency: I took the time to explain the rationale behind my recommendations, providing data and case studies that illustrated the long-term benefits of adopting new strategies. Transparency in my approach helped demystify my suggestions and made the proposed changes more palpable.

  5. Patience and Persistence: I learned that change often requires patience and persistence. I maintained a positive attitude and continued to propose solutions, even when they were initially met with skepticism.

Turning Point

The turning point came when one of the smaller initiatives demonstrated a significant improvement in a short amount of time. The success of this initiative provided a clear example of how new approaches could lead to better outcomes. Gradually, the client began to open up more to my suggestions, and our sessions became more collaborative.

Lessons Learned

This experience reinforced several key lessons:

  • Empathy is crucial: Understanding the client's perspective can transform a confrontational situation into a collaborative one.

  • Flexibility leads to better outcomes: Being flexible and willing to adjust strategies can sometimes be the key to success, even if it means deviating from the initial plan.

  • Persistence pays off: Change is hard and often met with resistance. Consistent, patient, and respectful insistence on high standards can lead to eventual buy-in.

Conclusion

The experience was a stark reminder that the path to improvement isn’t always straightforward. It tested my ability to navigate resistance but ultimately strengthened my skills in diplomacy and problem-solving. Most importantly, it reaffirmed the value of spending time to work on the system, not just in it, a lesson that both I and the client came to appreciate deeply.

Navigating such challenges is not just about asserting expertise, it's about guiding, supporting, and sometimes, stepping back to let others see the value of the work for themselves.
